Do it again? Without a doubt

From freshly baked bread in a traditional Berber home to breathtaking mountain scenery and an exceptional tour guide, this excursion outside Marrakech turned into one of the best experiences I've ever had.

Our honeymoon began in Marrakech, Morocco, a city known for its bustling Medina, colorful souks, and rich history. Between exploring the city and enjoying our stay at the Park Hyatt Marrakech, we had plenty to keep ourselves occupied.

However, we also wanted to experience something beyond the city itself, which is how we came across an excursion into the Atlas Mountains.

The tour offered an opportunity to explore the famous mountain range, visit traditional Berber villages, learn about the local culture, and enjoy authentic Moroccan cuisine. Being that the tour was also all-inclusive, it seemed like a fantastic way to spend a day outside Marrakech.

So, naturally, we booked it!

And let me tell you, this turned out to be one of the best tours I've ever taken.

Meeting Ismail: An Exceptional Tour Guide

One of the biggest reasons this experience was so memorable was our guide, Ismail.

I've participated in plenty of tours and excursions during my travels, and while I've encountered some excellent guides, Ismail was truly something special.

Our group consisted of just four people: my wife, me, and another couple who happened to be two college professors. They were absolutely wonderful to spend the day with, and we had some great conversations throughout the excursion and still periodically interact via Instagram!

Having such a small group made the experience feel much more personal, and the company certainly made the day even more enjoyable.

And speaking of Ismail, this guy was essentially a walking encyclopedia!

Seriously, it seemed like no matter what topic came up, Ismail had something interesting to share. Whether we were discussing Moroccan traditions, local communities, the geography surrounding us, or even some sort of global affairs topic, he always had an answer or an interesting story.

Even though this is the cover photo, it deserves another posting. Ismail (Left) was the best.

What I appreciated most was that his enthusiasm never felt forced. You could genuinely tell he enjoyed showing visitors around his country and introducing them to the people who call the mountains home.

Fresh Bread, Almond Butter, and Moroccan Hospitality

One of our first memorable stops was at a traditional Berber home, where we were welcomed inside to experience a small part of daily life in the Atlas Mountains.

We had the opportunity to watch fresh bread being prepared, which was then served alongside homemade almond butter and honey.

Now, I've had my fair share of hotel breakfasts over the years, including some pretty incredible spreads at luxury properties.

But sometimes, the simplest meals are the ones you remember most.

The freshly prepared bread paired with the almond butter and honey was absolutely phenomenal. Everything tasted incredibly fresh, and enjoying it in a local home made the experience that much more special. It was especially welcoming due to the fact that it was cold out, but one bite of the warm delicious bread brought us back to life.

It was also a wonderful introduction to the hospitality we would encounter throughout the day.

Tea by the River... and Lots of Cats!

Another memorable part of our excursion was stopping for tea alongside a river running through one of the valleys.

With the beautiful mountain scenery surrounding us and the sound of the river nearby, it was a wonderful opportunity to relax and take in our surroundings.

However, we weren't the only ones enjoying the area.

There were cats. Lots and lots of cats!

Now, here's the funny part. I'm actually allergic to cats, so being surrounded by a whole bunch of them isn't exactly my ideal situation.

But my goodness, they were adorable!

I couldn't help but admire them, even if my allergies would've preferred that I keep my distance.

Between the tea, the peaceful riverside setting, and our unexpected feline companions, this was another one of those small moments that made the day so enjoyable.

Sometimes the most memorable parts of traveling aren't necessarily the big attractions, but the little experiences you never expected.

Hiking Through a Traditional Berber Village

Later in the excursion, we met a local Berber guide who took our small group on a scenic hike through his home village.

The hike lasted approximately an hour and took us through some absolutely beautiful landscapes, with mountain scenery and views of the surrounding valleys.

However, what made this experience particularly interesting wasn't just the scenery.

Our local guide shared stories about his village, the traditions of the community, and what daily life was like for the people living in this mountainous region of Morocco.

I always appreciate opportunities like this when traveling. It's one thing to admire a beautiful landscape from the comfort of a vehicle, but it's another experience entirely to walk through a community with someone who actually lives there.

After completing our hike, we were welcomed into another local home for lunch.

And what was on the menu?

Vegetable soup, salad, chicken and vegetable tagine with couscous... and a dessert!

And of course, how could we forget the Moroccan tea? Poured the traditional way, from way up high!

If you've spent any time in Morocco, you'll know that tagine is one of the country's most recognizable dishes, and this particular meal was delicious.

Between the fresh bread earlier in the day and the chicken/vegetable tagine after our hike, the food alone was becoming one of the highlights of the excursion.

Breathtaking Scenery Throughout the Atlas Mountains

One of the biggest highlights of the entire excursion was simply taking in the incredible scenery throughout the Atlas Mountains.

As we continued our journey farther into the mountains, the landscapes were absolutely breathtaking. Between the towering mountains, beautiful valleys, traditional villages, and winding roads, there was seemingly something incredible to look at around every corner.

There were stretches of the drive where it felt like we had the entire landscape to ourselves, with little traffic and nothing but the beautiful scenery surrounding us.

Honestly, pictures don't quite do this place justice.

Again... unreal scenery of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains.

Marrakech is an incredible city with plenty to see and do, but getting away from the bustling Medina and experiencing the natural beauty of the Atlas Mountains offered an entirely different perspective on Morocco.

It was easily some of the most beautiful scenery we encountered during our time in the country, and I'm certainly glad we dedicated a day to exploring it.

The Sticker Man: A Small Gesture That Made a Big Impression

While the landscapes, food, and cultural experiences were all fantastic, one of the most memorable aspects of the day had nothing to do with the mountains themselves.

It had to do with Ismail and his relationship with the local children.

Throughout our journey, Ismail would occasionally stop along the road to hand out pencils and stickers to children living in the valleys.

Apparently, the children had even given him a nickname.

The Sticker Man!

And after seeing their reactions, it was pretty easy to understand why.

The excitement on the children's faces when they saw Ismail and received their little gifts was genuinely heartwarming.

What stood out to me was that this wasn't something Ismail appeared to be doing for the benefit of tourists. It felt like a genuine connection he had developed with the communities he regularly visited.

Random but... Chicken on a roof!
Random but... Chicken on a roof!

It was a small gesture, but one that clearly meant something to the children.

If you're planning a similar excursion with Ismail, I'd encourage you to ask whether bringing along some pencils, stickers, or small coloring supplies would be helpful.

You can find inexpensive stationery supplies throughout Marrakech's Medina, and coordinating with your guide beforehand is a thoughtful way to contribute.

Sometimes it's the little things that leave the biggest impression, and this was certainly one of those moments.

Was the Atlas Mountains Tour Worth It?

Absolutely. Without a doubt.

I've been fortunate enough to experience some incredible tours and excursions around the world, but this one genuinely stands out as one of my favorites.

The breathtaking landscapes, traditional Berber hospitality, delicious homemade food, and small group atmosphere made for a fantastic day outside Marrakech.

Having such wonderful company throughout the day was another added bonus, and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the two professors who joined us.

And who could forget our little cat friends by the river?

However, what truly elevated the experience was Ismail.

His knowledge, enthusiasm, and genuine connections with the local communities turned what could've been a fairly standard sightseeing excursion into something much more meaningful.

And while the early morning wake-up wasn't necessarily my favorite part of the day, it was absolutely worth it!

How to Book This Atlas Mountains Tour

If you're visiting Marrakech and want to experience the same excursion we took, you can find it here:

My recommendation? Request Ismail as your guide if he's available! However, I am sure that the other tour guides from this company are equally as good!

His enthusiasm, knowledge, and genuine connection with the local communities were what made this excursion so memorable for us.

Final Thoughts: A Golden Dumpling Award Winner!

Not every travel experience earns a Golden Dumpling Award here at Trailblazin' Half Asian, but this particular excursion absolutely deserves one.

From the breathtaking scenery of the Atlas Mountains to the incredible hospitality of the local Berber communities, this tour exceeded my expectations in just about every way.

For that reason, the Atlas Mountains excursion earns the Trailblazin' Half Asian Golden Dumpling Award!

If you're visiting Marrakech, I highly recommend setting aside a day to explore the Atlas Mountains.

This was one of the highlights of our time in Morocco and truly an unforgettable way to begin our honeymoon.
