- With my brother (start of a 10-day New Zealand trip)
As a Hyatt enthusiast, a Park Hyatt is always going to be at the top of my list, and the Park Hyatt Auckland had been on my radar for a while. This time around, I was kicking off a 10-day New Zealand trip with my brother, and a big conference in town had pushed cash rates up to around 700 to 800 dollars a night. That made this the perfect time to put my World of Hyatt points to work. Sitting right on the waterfront with views across the harbor, this hotel has a lot going for it: a gorgeous suite, a fantastic spa, excellent food, and one very good boy named Beau. There were a few things that kept it from feeling like a top-tier luxury stay, though. Please join me in this review of the Park Hyatt Auckland!
Booking & Pre Arrival 9/10
Booking ease and clarity
I booked this stay through the World of Hyatt app for 50,000 points over two nights, and the whole process took just a few taps. With a conference in town pushing cash rates to around 700 to 800 dollars a night, using points was a no-brainer.
Room type transparency
Room type transparency on the Hyatt website was excellent. I applied a Suite Upgrade Award to get into the Park Suite King, and the suite was exactly what the description promised, down to the generous size. No surprises, which is exactly what you want when you're spending an award on an upgrade.
Pre-arrival emails or messages
I received the standard Park Hyatt welcome email ahead of arrival. It covered the basics, but there was nothing to write home about. A more personal touch here would have set the tone nicely for the stay.
Getting to the hotel
We picked up a rental car from Enterprise at Auckland Airport and drove ourselves to the hotel. If you'd rather not drive, Uber and plenty of public transportation options will get you into the city center easily. Once you arrive, the valet takes it from there.
Location 10/10
Neighborhood convenience
The location is prime, about as good as it gets in Auckland. It's a really scenic spot, with ships all over the harbor and the city right there. The hotel sits right on the harbor, and there are great food options all around it, so you never have to go far for a good meal.

Walkability and transit access
The hotel is within perfect walking distance of everything. Between exploring the city and strolling the waterfront, we barely needed a car. When we did, the valet service was fluid and quick.

Check In Experience 6.5/10
Lobby atmosphere
The lobby sits at the bottom of the hotel's open atrium, so it's a busy, high-energy space. More on how that design affects the overall feel in the Amenities section.
Speed and efficiency
Check in was fast, but it seemed very rushed, like the goal was just to get us in and move on to the next guest. My guess is the team was dealing with an influx of people arriving for the conference.
Staff warmth
Because of how rushed it felt, check in didn't have the warm, personal welcome I've come to expect from Park Hyatt properties. There was no walk-through of the hotel or anything like that, just a quick check in to get us through the door.
Recognition of status
My status was recognized, which I appreciated. The front desk was so focused on getting us checked in quickly, though, that the whole exchange felt hurried. Rather than feeling like a welcome, it felt more like a transaction.
Room Comfort & Layout 9/10
Room size and layout
The Park Suite King was very spacious for two people. The layout was beautiful, with a really nice hardwood floor finish that gave the suite a warm, residential feel. And the view… spectacular. Looking out over the harbor from the suite never got old.

My one wish for this suite is an additional powder room, a separate toilet for guests and visitors so they don't have to go through the main bathroom. Other Park Hyatt suites I've stayed in have this, like the Park Hyatt Jakarta. For a suite of this size, it felt like a missing piece.
Bed comfort
Like all Park Hyatts, the bed firmness was immaculate. I love a firm bed for my back, so this is always something I look forward to. The bedding was as soft as can be, so I always had a great sleep.
Storage and usability
Storage was ample for a suite of this size. A walk-in closet sits right next to the toilet, with plenty of room to unpack fully and tuck the luggage out of sight.
Seating and workspace
There was lots of seating throughout the suite, so it was easy for both of us to spread out and relax or plan out the rest of our trip.
Good for two travelers
Absolutely. The space, the seating, and the harbor view make this suite a great fit for two, whether you're a couple or, like my brother and me, kicking off a trip together.
Cleanliness & Maintenance 9/10
Initial cleanliness
The suite was spotless on arrival and fully up to Park Hyatt standards. That means no dust on the surfaces, streak-free glass and mirrors, crisp linens, and every amenity neatly in its place. It's the kind of polish where you notice nothing out of place, which is exactly the point.
Housekeeping
Housekeeping was immaculate. Everything was restocked, fresh towels appeared every time, and the bed was made to perfection. Turndown service was a lovely touch too, with extra bottles of water and slippers set out for the evening.
Bathroom Experience 8/10
Bathroom condition
The bathroom was very clean and well laid out. A dual vanity gave us both ample counter space, and the rain shower was huge, easily big enough to fit four people. As mentioned above, the biggest knock here is the lack of a separate powder room. With only the main bathroom in the suite, any guest who drops by has to use it.
Shower pressure and temperature
The rain shower delivered on both pressure and temperature. Hot water came quickly and stayed steady, with no issues at all.

Toiletries quality
The Le Labo Bergamote 22 soaps and lotion are always my favorite part of a Park Hyatt stay, and this one was no exception. That bright citrus scent instantly makes the bathroom feel like a treat.
Noise & Climate Control 9/10
Soundproofing
Since we were in the Park Suite, we couldn't hear anything from the hallway, or the harbor for that matter. It was a purely serene experience.
AC and heat effectiveness
The AC was perfect. I could manage the temperature with no issues, and the airflow responded accordingly. I live off of 67 degrees every day and when I sleep, so I love the room to be cold… if I need it warmer, I'll just put on a sweater.
Wi-Fi, Power & Tech 9/10
Wi-Fi speed and reliability
The Wi-Fi was reliable, nothing out of this world. I forgot to run a speed test, but I had no reliability issues and was able to watch Netflix and FaceTime family without a problem.
Outlet placement
There were plenty of ports by the bed and around the room, no issues there.
Room controls
Like all classic luxury hotels, it's a game of light control merry-go-round to figure out which switch controls which light. By the end of the first day, I had it all figured out.
Food & Beverage 9.5/10
Breakfast quality and value
Breakfast was elaborate, with both à la carte and buffet options, so you can load up from the buffet and still order something made to order. There wasn't one dish that stood out above the rest; everything was very tasty and fresh. As a Globalist, breakfast was complimentary for both of us.

Early departure breakfast
One morning, we were heading to Rotorua for white water rafting, which meant getting up at 3 AM and driving about 3 hours to make our morning session. It was way too early for breakfast downstairs, so the front desk coordinated with the kitchen to make us both to-go boxes with pastries, fruit, yogurt and a drink. It was a very kind gesture and a great way to start our early day on the road.
On site dining and bar
The hotel has numerous dining options (see their website: hyatt.com/park-hyatt/en-US/aklph-park-hyatt-auckland/dining):
- Onemata – The signature restaurant, serving seasonal menus built around local New Zealand ingredients. It's also where breakfast is served. Bookings are essential for dinner.
- The Living Room – Waterfront dining with shareable menus, plus afternoon tea.
- The Pantry – A casual café with specialty coffee, pastries, salads and sandwiches.
- Captain's Bar – The hotel bar, with cocktails and New Zealand wines.
- In-Room Dining – Room service, if you'd rather stay in.
We only ate at Onemata for one dinner, and it was phenomenal. I honestly can't remember exactly what we ordered, but every course was a hit, from the bread and whipped butter all the way through dessert.

Right outside the hotel and around the corner, there's a plethora of restaurants along the boardwalk and across the pedestrian bridge. Heads up: the bridge goes up to let ships through, so you may have to wait a few minutes to cross.
Amenities & Common Spaces 8/10
Gym quality
The gym was spacious and well equipped, with a variety of free weights and machines. It was easy to get a solid workout in before heading out to explore.

Pool and spa
The spa was great. I had a 60-minute massage and it was a highlight of the stay. The hydrotherapy room was solid, and the locker room was spacious.
The one letdown was the cold plunge at the pool… it wasn't cold. If you're a cold plunge person like me, don't get your hopes up.

Lounge areas and overall design
This one is nitpicky, but it shaped how the hotel felt to me. The hotel is built around an open atrium, so from the top floor you can look all the way down into the lobby. It's an impressive sight, but it made the hotel feel more like a conference center hotel, like a Gaylord, the Orlando Airport hotel or even a Hyatt Regency at times, than a luxury hotel. With a conference going on during our stay, that feeling was even stronger.

Miscellaneous Items
Staff and attention to detail
I have to give a special shoutout to Beau, the hotel's Ambassadog and hands down THE BEST AMBASSADOG. Beau was so cute and lovely during our stay, and as a dog person myself, it was a truly lovely experience. This was the only Park Hyatt (let alone any hotel) I've seen with an Ambassadog. Sadly, Park Hyatt Auckland announced his retirement in a post on October 9, so future guests won't get to meet him. He deserves the best retirement from his doggo duties. Go live your life to the max, good boy! Outside of the rushed check in, the rest of the team was great, from the spa to the restaurants to the valet.

Things to do
- Walk the waterfront around Wynyard Quarter and Viaduct Harbour
- Eat along the boardwalk and across the pedestrian bridge (watch for it lifting for ships)
- Book a 60-minute massage at the spa and spend time in the hydrotherapy room
- Swim in the infinity pool
- Work out in the gym
- Take a day trip to Rotorua for white water rafting (about a 3-hour drive)
Could you work comfortably here?
Yes. With plenty of seating in the suite and a central location, it's an easy place to work from, especially if you're in town for business or a conference.
Would I stay here again?
Yes.
Same room type?
Yes. The Park Suite King is more than enough space for two people.
Only on points?
Yes, especially when cash rates spike like they did during our stay. Here's how the value worked out.
If I had paid cash for 2 nights at 700 to 800 dollars a night, the total would have been around $1,400 to $1,600.
I paid 50,000 World of Hyatt points.
(1,400 / 50,000) x 100 = 2.8 cents per point
(1,600 / 50,000) x 100 = 3.2 cents per point
I got roughly 2.8 to 3.2 cents per point on this redemption. Hyatt points are typically valued at around 1.4 to 1.7 cents each, so I got roughly double the usual value. This was a great redemption!
